INVITATION OF RESEARCH PROPOSALS FOR FUNDING UNDER

 ALP 4TH BATCH

 

PARC invites Research Proposals (Concept papers and full blown projects) from the scientists/researchers for the award of research grants through AREF under the Agricultural Linkages Program (ALP). The program focuses on achieving food security, poverty alleviation and promoting broad based equitable and sustainable agriculture in Pakistan. The research grants will be highly competitive. Innovative research proposals addressing issues relating to the productivity, profitability, competitiveness and sustainability of agriculture sector with focus on small farmers will be considered for funding.  

The Research Proposals for the 4th batch of ALP may include the following major disciplines/areas but not necessarily limited to these. The detailed research priorities are given below:

 Detailed Research priority areas  

plant Sciences 

Crop Production 

·     Development of low input-high yielding crop varieties especially aligned to resource conservation technologies. 

·        Hybrid development in rice, maize, sunflower and canola.

·        Impact of climate change on crop productivity and mitigation strategies.

Farm Machinery

 ·     Develop/adoption of drying/ dehydration technology in chilies, date palm and other fruits.

·        Improvement in designs and structures of tunnels and production management for off-season vegetables.

 Plant Protection 

·        Biology and management of phytoplasma diseases in fruits and vegetables.

·        Epidemiology and management of bacterial diseases (rice, citrus etc.) especially caused by fastidious bacteria.

·        Pest risk analysis in cotton-wheat, rice-wheat and horticulture (Mango, Dates and Citrus) cropping system.

·        Aphid control in wheat, oilseeds, fruits and vegetables.

 Horticulture

·        Shelf life improvements in mango and oranges through genetic transformation.

·        Hybrid development in tomato, cucumber and chilies. floriculture through extraction of essential oils, perfumes and concentrates.

·        Evaluation and commercialization of exotic bulbous flowering plants including gladoulus, tuberose, tulips, frezia, lilies, amraylus and orkids etc. 

Natural Resources 

Land Resources Management

 ·     Mobilization of native/ indigenous soil phosphates.

·        Integrated nutrient (organic, inorganic and biological) management for major cropping patterns of various land use systems (irrigated, barani, rod-kohi).

·        Developing technologies for profitable organic farming. 

Water Resources & Climate Change

 ·        Assessment of climate change impacts on natural resources (water availability and temperature) and development of adaptation strategies.

·        Improving water and energy efficient technologies of irrigated, barani and rod-kohi land use systems.

·        Optimizing the use of fresh and poor quality waters for sustaining soil health. 

Range Management, Forestry & Environment 

·        Identification of policy issues and reforms for major land use systems (watersheds, rangelands, irrigated lands, barani, rod-kohi, etc.).

 Animal Sciences

 Breeding & Genetics:

 

·        Genetic characterization of small ruminants.

·        Develop advanced molecular genetic techniques for detection of QTLs for economically important traits (Milk and Meat). 

Improving Feed Resources and Technologies:

 ·        Economics of early weaning of calf for different production systems.

 Animal Health 

·        Development of techniques for production of vaccine to control FMD.

·        Studies on antiviral activity of indigenous plants.

·        Animals and farm bio-safety/bio-security issues and control of animal disease epidemics. 

Animal Reproduction 

·        Assisted Reproductive Techniques (AI, MOET, IVF) in farm animals and physiology & management of cyclicity in buffaloes 

Livestock Product Technology 

  • Research in human bio-safety issues in plant and animal origin food chain  

Fisheries and Aquaculture 

·        Development of least cost feed for intensive fish culture (in collaboration with private sector).

·        Marine & inland resource assessment & their management with specific reference to mangrove forests, mahaseer, Hilsa (palla) and tuna fishes. 

Social Sciences

International Trade Marketing 

·        Export market development studies for priority countries and commodities.

·        Analysis of modalities for WTO agreement on agriculture, and impact of bilateral and multilateral trade agreements on agriculture.

 Agricultural Policy Analysis

 ·        Evaluation of policy interventions (subsidy, price policies, credit, water pricing, privatization of research, high efficiency irrigation, seed production etc.).

 Agribusiness Research

 ·        Cost of doing business in agriculture.           

Production and Resource Economics

 ·        Regional agricultural productivity analysis.

 

The project concept note along with detailed project proposal (4 copies each) may be submitted to the Executive Director, ALP for funding under ALP. Both the proformae (preliminary proposal and detailed project) and instructions to the participating scientists/researchers can be downloaded from ALP Website.  The  e. mail’s add. Of ALP Secretariat is: alpparc@comsats.net.pk. The proposals will be processed on first come first basis during the F.Y. 2008-09.

 The proformae can also be collected from Room No.203 & 205, ALP Secretariat, PARC. The participating scientists/researchers may also submit the soft copies of proposals on CD.
